Out-of-State and Virtual Consultations

Helping patients nationwide navigate expert spine care safely and legally.

Where Dr. Mahan Is Licensed to Provide Care

While Dr. Mahan has treated patients from across the United States, he can only provide direct medical care in states where he holds active licenses.
He maintains licenses in California, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, Montana, and Arizona.

This is due to the U.S. system of state-by-state medical licensing requirements.

Virtual Visits from Licensed States

If you live outside Utah but are physically in one of these licensed states (even temporarily), Dr. Mahan can conduct a virtual consultation through secure video and audio communication. This option allows patients to receive expert guidance without traveling to Salt Lake City.

Second Opinion Program

The University of Utah is introducing a new “Second Opinion” system that will soon be available to patients nationwide. Because of licensing rules, these consultations will provide general medical advice rather than direct treatment recommendations, but they can still help guide next steps for care.

Written Consultations for Your Physician

Dr. Mahan can also offer a written consultation to your primary care provider (PCP), with a copy sent to you. This review is based on your MRI and requires a formal request from your PCP to your insurance.

The language your PCP should use:

“Interprofessional telephone / Internet / electronic health assessment and management service provided by a consultative physician or other qualified health care professional, including a written report to the patient’s treating /requesting physician or other qualified health care professional.”

Your Consultation Options

• Visit Utah in person
• Virtual visit from a licensed state
• Wait for the Second Opinion system
• Request a written consultation through your PCP
